Caregivers are hired to help with household activities when the participant cannot manage the home and care of him/herself. Here are a few examples:

  • Essential Duties

    Chore services are short-term, on-and-off again tasks necessary to keep a safe, clean, and healthy home for the participant. For example: washing walls and wood work, cleaning closets, basements and attics.

    Caregivers must be at least 18 years of age, possess excellent organizational and communication skills, share a compassionate ability to work with others, and have flexibility in schedules and job functions.

  • Compassion

    Caregivers improve the quality of life and respect the dignity of participants when assisting with personal care needs such as bathing, dressing, maintaining the home, and managing medications.

Role of a Caregiver


A caregiver provides basic personal care and maintenance services to assist with daily living activities. This position is responsible for providing basic personal care and chores for CDS program participants.  

Essential Duties:  

  • Dietary needs, including meal preparation, cleanup, and assistance with eating/feeding. 

  • Dressing and grooming, including helping with dressing and undressing, combing hair, and nail care.  

  • Bathing and personal hygiene, including bathing, shampooing hair, toothbrushing, denture care, and shaving. 

  • Toileting and continence, including assistance in going to the bathroom and changing the linen.   

  • Mobility and transfer, including moving the participant when they cannot bear their own weight.    

  • Medically related household tasks, including approved homemaker and chore tasks. 

Homemaker Tasks: 

  • Plan and prepare meals, including special diet menus

  • Cleanup after meals, wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils, etc.

  • Clean kitchen counters, cupboards, and appliances, including oven, surface burners, and inside refrigerator

  • Clean bathroom fixtures

  • Make beds and change sheets 

  • Sweep, vacuum, and scrub floors 

  • Tidy and dust the home 

  • Iron, mend, and launder clothes and linens

  • Wash inside windows and clean blinds that are within reach without climbing   

  • Bag trash inside home and put it out for pick up 

  • Shop for necessary items (groceries, cleaning supplies, etc.)

  • Perform necessary errands (pick up medications, post mail, etc.) 

  • Read and write necessary correspondence for people with disabilities
